Metalica recently released a new music video for the song “Hero of the Day.” The clip was filmed by Anton Corbijn and follows a drug-addicted teen who watches television all day long. Each show on the television features Metallica in some way, including a Western movie featuring James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, a boxing match starring Hetfield, a game show with the band’s names as the contestants, and a news broadcast involving Hetfield.
In addition to being a great heavy metal track, “Hero of the Day” is a fitting example of the monomyth theory created by Joseph Campbell. The monomyth is the idea that most heroes go on a journey replete with demons, both inner and outer, challenges, and a cast of supporting characters.
The New York Post’s 2021 Hero of the Day series won the Rev. Mychal Judge Heart of New York Award from the New York Press Club Friday for journalism that uplifts the city in its darkest hours of the COVID-19 pandemic. The series, which ran 68 days online and in print, profiled essential workers and volunteers across the city. From a Brooklyn charge nurse to funeral workers and a pair of office workers who started donating their unused commuting fares, each hero had a unique story to tell.
